The Race

We want to bring Cyclocross to the people and make it possible to race in the heart of Vancouver. Spectators and friends can enjoy a day in a beautiful location watching some of Canada's best 'cross racers in action. Vanier Park Cyclocross is part of the BC CX Cup and a long time mainstay of the 'cross calendar of the Lower Mainland. We have a devoted following (nearly 200 racers in 2011) from the local community, the Greater Metro Vancouver area and the Interior but also with US visitors and from Vancouver Island which makes our race one of the biggest in BC and even Canada. Still, our numbers are modest compared to the turnout in the States – but we are growing each year ...

The Sport

Cyclocross is a special cycling discipline probably best described as a steeple chase with your bike. The races are short (30 to 60 min) but intense, going around a course of 2-3 km in mostly parks and fields with natural or manmade obstacles like stairs or barriers. The participants are riding mountain bikes or special cross bikes with road wheels but wider tires and better brakes. It's a sport for fall/winter season with rain and mud almost welcome and everybody is going hard to stay warm – and ahead of this other rider ...

The sport is great for developing bike handling skills and attractive for beginners since it is safe and easy to learn. Crashes are likely but rarely with consequences outside of a muddy jersey. The sport is hugely popular in Belgium and the US (New England states and West Coast) with the World Championships coming to Kentucky this season.

The Family Event

The Vanier Park Cyclocross is traditionally on a Sunday to ensure the whole family can come out and participate; aside from categories for all ages and skill levels we offer free Kids' races (2-9 years and 10 to 12 years) to promote safety and fun on two wheels. The Kids' races are the true highlight with so much laughter and smiles. We offer snacks for the kids and prizes to honor the future champions and free BBQ for all registered participants.

Even for spectators it is fun to check out the athletes mastering the course while the beautiful Kitsilano waterfront makes a great walk with baby stroller or leash. The award ceremonies are held against a backdrop of the Vancouver skyline with lots of prizes for the podium and the cheering crowd.

And last but not least the Expo area provides a great opportunity to our sponsors and supporters to show case their products and services and for the racers and visitors to chill out, to grab a bite to eat and to mingle with friends and competitors.
